about the performers
Ken Allen completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in English at UNC-Chapel Hill and at Harvard before earning a Master of Music degree in Viola Performance at the Boston Conservatory and a Graduate Performance Diploma in Historical Performance at the Longy School of Music. He enjoys playing new music as much as early music and has performed with a wide variety of ensembles in the Boston area and beyond. His principal teachers include Sarah Darling, Dana Maiben, David Rubinstein, Jane Starkman, Lenny Matczynksi, Lila Brown, Gillian Rogell, and Anne Hooper Webb.
Albano Berberi was born in Albania in 1990, and first began his violin studies in Greece at age five. He then moved to the United States, where he developed a passionate interest in Baroque music. In 2017, he graduated with an Artist Diploma in harpsichord from the Longy School of Music of Bard College. Currently, Albano performs on violin and harpsichord in the US and Canada. He has also composed several original works in the Baroque style, several of which have been performed by groups such as Harvard Baroque and the Rare Byrds Ensemble.
Clarinetist and instrument builder Thomas Carroll performs throughout North America and Europe on historical instruments in venues ranging from Berlin’s Kozerthaus to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. He has been a soloist with Mercury Chamber Orchestra, Lyra Baroque, Ensemble ad Libitum, Boston Baroque, and Grand Harmonie, garnering critical acclaim and currently performs as principal clarinetist with Mercury, Philharmonia Baroque, and Teatro Nuovo, collaborating with HiP specialists throughout North America including the Clarion Music and Handel and Haydn Societies, Sonoma Bach, Musica Angelica, and Boston Baroque. He additionally builds chalumeaux, clarinets, and basset horns, which are played throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
Violinist Emily Hale collaborates with and connects people and ideas through music. Her ensemble The Halfmoon's recent virtual concert PrintWorks featured 17th century music and historic printing presses, and new compositions and animations inspired by them. Emily has performed with The Sebastians, Emmanuel Music, Four Nations Ensemble, the Early Opera Company on BBC Channel 4, and at the Valetta International Baroque Festival. Emily is Instructor of Violin and Viola at Bridgewater State University. She completed an MPerf in Historical Performance with Distinction at the Royal College of Music in London, winning the McKenna Prize for Baroque Music.
Praised for his musicality and virtuosity, Allen Hamrick enjoys a career as a period bassoonist and recorder player. He has performed with the Boston Early Music Festival, Boston Baroque, The Handel and Haydn Society, and he has performed for Bach festivals in Toronto and Charlotte, North Carolina. Recently, Allen helped to usher in the return of opera to New York City with the Teatro Nuovo Bel Canto festival. Allen frequently performs with La Fiocco and other ensembles across the country. Upcoming performances include a program of early classical symphonies with La Grande Bande; Handel's Esther with Zenith Ensemble and Monadnock Chorus, and a reappearance in the Charlotte Bach Festival. Allen holds music degrees from Indiana University, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and The Juilliard School, where he toured nationally and internationally with Juilliard415 under the direction of renowned directors William Christie, Masaaki Suzuki, and Jordi Savall.
Allen Maracle is a cellist who originated from Rochester, NY. He earned his undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Cello Performance at SUNY Fredonia, in Western New York. Currently, Allen is working towards completing a Masters degree in Historical Performance Performance at Boston University, Where he studies Baroque Cello with Sarah Freiberg. In addition to being a teaching artist with the Boston Music Project, he also teaches with El Sistema Somerville.
Violinist Julia McKenzie performs on historical and modern violins in a wide range of musical styles with numerous diverse ensembles. Her musical adventures have included appearances in international music festivals, performances with the multimedia group Melodic Vision, and dabbling in jazz, blues & rock with area bands. Committed to bringing music to underserved audiences, she is a member of Shelter Music Boston and co-director of Eudaimonia: A Purposeful Period Band. A dedicated teacher, Julia presents historical violin demonstrations and workshops, and is on the faculty of the All Newton Music School, Hamilton Garrett Music & Arts, and the Prep School of her alma mater, the New England Conservatory.
Having recently relocated from San Diego, California, violist/violinist Madeline Stewart is now an active performer and teacher in the Boston area. Ms. Stewart has performed with several ensembles as Principal Second Violin including the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra, San Diego City Ballet Orchestra, and the Opera Neo Orchestra, where she is a founding member of over nine seasons. She has shared the stage with various music legends including Johnny Mathis and Silk Road Ensemble artists, and performs as an avid orchestra and chamber musician internationally. Ms. Stewart served as Violin Faculty at California State University San Marcos, instructional coach at Palomar Community College, and is currently on faculty at the Boston String Academy.
Hideki Yamaya is a performer of lutes, early guitars, and early mandolins based in Connecticut, USA. Born in Tokyo, Japan, he spent most of his career in the West Coast before settling in New England, where he is a freelance performer and teacher. In demand both as a soloist and as a continuo/chamber player, Hideki has performed with and for Portland Baroque Orchestra, Portland Opera, Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Los Angeles Opera, California Bach Society, Oregon Bach Festival, Astoria Music Festival, Music of the Baroque, and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
